An Experience for Adventure Lovers: 2 Days / 1 Night

🇺🇸 Embark on an unforgettable two-day, one-night adventure to explore the majestic Acatenango Volcano, one of Guatemala’s most spectacular volcanoes. Famous for its breathtaking views of the active Fuego Volcano, Acatenango offers the unique opportunity to witness volcanic eruptions from camp throughout the night.

Standing at 3,976 meters (13,044 ft), Acatenango provides an extraordinary experience immersed in nature, crossing diverse ecosystems ranging from forests and volcanic landscapes to stunning views above the clouds. On the second day, participants have the option to hike to the summit, where spectacular sunrise views and panoramic vistas of the Guatemalan highlands await.

This experience can be enjoyed in two different ways, depending on your fitness level and preferred style of adventure:

1. Traditional Hiking Option

This is the classic and most adventurous way to experience Acatenango. The hike to base camp takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and requires a good level of physical fitness, as the ascent is demanding. It is ideal for travelers who enjoy trekking and are looking for a rewarding outdoor challenge.

On the second day, an additional hike to the summit offers unforgettable sunrise views and exceptional photo opportunities.

2. 4x4 Vehicle Option

For travelers who wish to enjoy the experience with less physical effort, a 4x4 vehicle option is available. This alternative reduces approximately 80% of the hiking distance. From the point where the vehicle route ends, participants complete a short walk of about 40 minutes to reach the camp.

As with the traditional option, guests may also hike to the summit on the second day if they wish.

Both alternatives make the Acatenango experience accessible to families, teenagers, and active travelers with appropriate preparation and fitness levels.

Throughout the adventure, you will be accompanied by professional guides and supported by a well-organized logistics team, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: enjoying one of the most remarkable volcanic experiences in Central America.

If you are looking for an excursion that combines adventure, nature, and unforgettable landscapes, Acatenango Volcano is undoubtedly one of the most memorable experiences Guatemala has to offer.

🇺🇸 RECOMMENDATIONS BEFORE YOUR ACATENANGO EXPEDITION:

Bring cash in quetzals in case you want to pay for something extra like food, porters etc.

The Night Before: Fuel Your Adventure!
Light dinner, great energy: The day before the tour, we suggest having a light and easily digestible dinner. This will help your stomach feel comfortable and ensure you're in optimal condition for the ascent. Think of pasta, rice, or vegetables; avoid very heavy or greasy foods.

Dress for Success: Smart Layers

  • Start cool, prepare for the cold: At the beginning of the hike, you'll feel more comfortable in cool, breathable clothing, like shorts or light pants and a sports shirt. However, remember that temperatures change drastically with altitude. Therefore, it's essential to carry extra warm clothing in your backpack for the night and summit. Think layers: a thermal shirt, a fleece, and a windbreaker or waterproof jacket will be your best allies.

  • Your Feet: The Motor of the Expedition
The right footwear changes everything: For your comfort, support, and protection during the hike, we highly recommend wearing hiking boots. Their design will provide you with the grip and stability needed on uneven terrain.

  • Note: Cotton retains moisture and dries very slowly. When wet, it loses its ability to retain heat, increasing the risk of hypothermia—especially at high altitudes. It's better to use synthetic materials like fleece, polyester, or merino wool, which dry quickly and help retain body heat even when wet. This is key to staying warm and safe during the night on the volcano.

🇺🇸 The itinerary may vary depending on the physical condition of the participants and, above all, the weather conditions.

At an altitude of 4,000 m, at the summit of Acatenango, the air contains 40% less oxygen. Every step is a challenge, every breath a victory.

Volcanic activity is unpredictable. During periods of high activity, strombolian eruptions (explosions without lava flow) can occur approximately once an hour. However, after an intense phase, the volcano may also enter a period of calm or temporary "sleep," during which its activity decreases significantly.

Approximate temperature:

  • Base camp: -2 °C / 28 °F

  • Summit: -5 °C / 23 °F

On the volcano, the sky can clear in an instant… or unleash a sudden storm. With over 360 microclimates in Guatemala, each ascent is an adventure and every moment a triumph.

On Volcán Acatenango, the mountain sets the rules of the journey. We cannot guarantee the following:

  • Clear views

  • Volcanic eruptions

  • Good weather

  • Ascent to the crest of Fuego

  • Reaching the summit for sunrise

  • Vistas despejadas

  • Erupciones volcánicas

  • Buen clima

  • Ascenso a la cresta de Fuego

    • Alcanzar la cima para el amanecer
